A cyberattack targeting United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) has led to substantial disruptions for the Feather River Food Co-op, resulting in significant product shortages and a decline in sales. This nationwide issue has impacted numerous grocery retailers, including prominent chains and independent stores like Whole Foods and Kroger. The co-op is facing limited stock across several key categories, with only partial fulfillment of orders, affecting its ability to meet consumer demands.
The origins of this disruption trace back to an attack that compromised UNFI's operational capabilities earlier this month. As a primary distributor for Feather River Food Co-op, UNFI's inability to fully process orders has left the co-op struggling to maintain inventory levels. Currently, only about 40% of submitted orders are being fulfilled, creating sparse shelves in critical sections such as dairy, meat, frozen goods, and beverages. Ross MacNeil, the outreach coordinator for the co-op, emphasized that these shortages stem from supply chain failures rather than mismanagement.
Financial repercussions have already surfaced, with the co-op experiencing a weekly sales drop of approximately $6,200 compared to the prior week. Additionally, current sales figures lag behind last year's by roughly 5.5%. In response to the crisis, the co-op is exploring alternative suppliers to mitigate the impact. Despite ongoing challenges, customers should anticipate continued updates via the co-op’s digital platforms as the situation progresses.
Feather River Food Co-op remains dedicated to overcoming this adversity by maintaining transparency and resilience. The organization encourages community support during this period of adjustment while striving to restore normalcy in its operations.
