On a lively evening in early April, the Clark Thrift Store was transformed into an intimate concert venue for Startup Sounds, a vibrant student music showcase. Attendees squeezed together, their excitement palpable as they eagerly awaited performances from aspiring artists. This event highlighted the talents of students enrolled in MUSC 133, "Beginning A Music Career," under the guidance of Professor Ash L’esperance. Through heartfelt songs spanning multiple genres, these young musicians not only showcased their skills but also conveyed deep personal narratives. From indie tunes to game-inspired melodies, each act left a lasting impression on the audience.
Inspired by her extensive career in music, which has taken her from Nashville to Worcester, Professor Ash L’esperance designed the course to blend theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Her collaboration with her husband Eric, known as Ash & Eric, features numerous successful albums and singles. For this unique event, she aimed to bring classroom learning into the real world by organizing a public performance. The evening commenced with the first act igniting the room's energy, setting the stage for what would be an unforgettable night of music.
The lineup featured eight talented musicians who delivered diverse performances ranging from introspective ballads to energetic rap tracks. Among them were Lydia Hadie and Caelan, whose duet "Sunflower Kisses" painted vivid images of youthful love and longing. Later, Hadie captivated the crowd with two additional tracks, "Bus to Boston" and "Picture Frame," reflecting themes of nostalgia and unrequited affection. Another standout performer, Kymani Shay, shared their original piece "Time Until It's Done," delivering a poignant message about moving forward despite life's uncertainties.
A highlight of the evening came when Malcolm Kirby presented two compositions inspired by video games. These pieces challenged conventional storytelling through music, bringing quirky yet emotional scenarios to life. Kirby explained how creating such unconventional soundscapes fuels their passion for game music. Toward the end of the showcase, Professor L’esperance joined forces with Caelan for an impromptu rendition of Ash & Eric’s latest single, "Chasing the Light." Despite limited preparation, their harmonious voices resonated beautifully within the cozy space.
